FCCPC shuts Abuja Chinese supermarket over discrimination against Nigerians
Officials of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have shut down a Chinese supermarket in Abuja, following claims of discrimination against Nigerians. The facility is located at the China General Chamber of Commerce.
The officials invaded the premises of the supermarket on Monday and shut the supermarket
The commission’s officials reportedly sealed up the facility after interrogating Nigerian workers at the supermarket and they claimed that Nigerians were being subjected to discrimination.
Earlier on Sunday, Nigerians had expressed disappointment at a discriminatory policy implemented by the supermarket management which restricted entry exclusively to Chinese citizens and barred Nigerians from entering the place.
The Manager of the complex, Shaibu Sanusi, confirmed that Nigerians from outside the complex are not allowed to shop there, except only those (Nigerians) within the place.
The workers said that the proprietor of the supermarket, a Chinese lady, Cindy Liu Bei, fled on Monday at 8:26 am with her family as she confirmed the Closed-Circuit Television camera.
Subsequently, the FCCPC officials shut down the facility.
The problem started on Sunday when some Nigerians who wanted to patronise the facility were denied entry on discriminatory grounds and reacted on their Facebook X accounts and then reported the matter to the FCCPC.
One Uncle Deji @DejiAdesogan wrote on X: “So there’s a Chinese supermarket in Abuja where Nigerians cannot enter, let alone buy anything, that only Chinese are allowed? So weird to believe.”
Another X user, Otunba AbdulFattah @OyedeleFatai, while corroborating the claim, said he was denied entrance twice this year.
“Yes! China Chambers of Commerce along Airport Road. I was denied access twice this year. The security told me that they have stopped Nigerians from entering the premises since January 2024. Nonsense! @Nafdac Agency @fccpcnigeria,” he wrote.
